Twins puzzle.
Brianna is a very smart girl. Too smart, I think. She asks many questions, and they can be very hard to skirt around sometimes.
Take baby-making, for instance. When we sat her down to discuss the fact that I was expecting a baby (turned out to be two), she asked the inevitable questions: "How did the baby get in there? How did you make the baby?" The best way we could explain it to a 3-year-old was to say that Mommy and Daddy make a baby kind of like a puzzle... Mommy has a piece and Daddy has the other. When the pieces are put together, it can make a baby. We didn't go into all the details of egg, sperm and sex.... she has chosen some choice moments to blab info she has learned, so we tried to keep everything as G-Rated as possible.
Let's fast forward more than a year to a few mornings ago....
Brianna climbed in bed with Mike for a snuggle while I took a shower. I came out of the bathroom to see Mike scrunch up his face in an attempt to not burst out laughing. Brianna was just looking at him with the most serious look on her face. Hmmm.... something's up.
Mike tells me, "Brianna was wondering if she should marry one of her schoolmates when she's grown-up since this little boy is so nice and invited her over for a sleepover. She'd need to buy a wedding dress of course.... Oh, can she borrow your twin puzzle? She'd like to have twins when she's married!"
"Twin puzzle? What twin puzzle??"
"Y'know, the twin puzzle that you used to make our twins!"
Oh-My-GAWD!!! Out of the mouths of babes!! I realized that it was unfair to laugh, since we TOLD her that's how we got the twins -- even though I did say that the twins thing was a surprise, and we didn't choose that. I thought using the image of a puzzle would be easy for her to understand... she loves puzzles and knows the concept of proper pieces fitting together to make a picture. I guess I shouldn't assume she knows that I do not have little cardboard puzzle pieces sitting around the house (or floating around in my body) that I can use to make a baby. Boy, is she in for a surprise when she realizes that we were not so honest about how the twins were made!
Now, what's this about the little boy inviting her over for a sleepover??
